Where I started.
I'm James, a freelance IT and cyber security professional based on the Sunshine Coast, working with businesses on the Sunshine Coast and remotely across Australia.
I first got into IT at a young age, tinkering with devices. I've been building websites since 2007. What started as an interest in websites and computers has developed into a career covering IT support, cyber security, web design and technical consulting.
I help small businesses solve technology problems, improve their cyber security and build websites that work for their business.
Over time, my interest in technology developed into a much broader focus on IT and cyber security.
I completed a Certificate IV in Cyber Security through TAFE Queensland, followed by a Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security from the University of the Sunshine Coast.
My experience spans across IT support, system admin, monitoring security events in Microsoft Defender, and other security stack tools. Working in IT has given me an understanding of the problems businesses actually face day to day.
It's not just about fixing a computer when something stops working. It's understanding how systems connect, how users interact with technology, where security weaknesses can occur and what happens when something goes wrong.

Why I work with small businesses.
Small businesses rarely have the resources of a large organisation, or an internal IT and cyber security team. That does not make their technology or their security any less worth getting right.
It does change what useful advice looks like. Before recommending anything I want to understand what you are already running and what you are actually trying to achieve because the fix is usually in what you have, configured properly, rather than in something new bought to replace it.
That includes saying so when the answer is to leave something alone. Not every finding is worth acting on, and not every tool is worth the licence.

Microsoft SC-900
Security, Compliance and Identity: the vendor certification for Microsoft 365 and Azure security, which is what most small businesses actually run on.
